Friends affectionately call him ‘Rivas’. He has experimented with a number of instruments: including guitar, harmonica, piano, bass & accordion before dedicating himself to the mandolin.

His musical background includes playing in a variety of bands and in different musical styles: bluegrass/newgrass, singer songwriter/folk, & old-time Dixie-Swing, Americana, etc.
He enjoys attending various festivals namely the Kerrville Folk Festival and Old Settlers where he enjoys staying up all night playing music.  He also plays at various open mics around town.

His love of Django Reinhardt's playing inspired him to host his own acoustic music circles in his home which eventually led to him starting Djamberry Caravan.

His musical influences are wide and diverse but include the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, David Grisman, Oscar Aleman, Tchavolo Schmitt, Vassar Clements, Jerry Garcia, Angelo Debarre & the Rosenberg Trio, Potroast, the String Cheese Incident, Leftover Salmon, WSP, Phish and his hometown favorite, the Hightailers.
